The Consumer Guarantees Act Amendment (Right to Repair) Bill passed its first reading in February 2025. The Select Committee has reported back after reviewing submissions and considering changes to the bill.

Despite overwhelming public support for the Bill and collaborative work on many amendments, the Committee is NOT recommending the Bill be passed and is NOT recommending any changes.

What can we do?

Contact your MP today and ask them to back the Bill when it has its second reading. This is expected to be on Wednesday 17th September.

The Select Committee chose not to recommend the Bill but they haven’t explained why – you can ask your MP for an explanation.

There were several changes (amendments) the Committee worked out through consensus to improve the effectiveness of the Bill and resolve the concerns of government MPs. Government MPs on the Select Committee rejected recommending these changes at the last minute, so we’re putting these amendments back on the table.

If MPs are concerned about the broadness of the Bill, they should support the amendments to improve and narrow the Bill, not reject the Bill out of hand.

Ask your MP to support the Bill and support the amendments.

  • Clearer definition of “spare part”
