The Green Party is calling on the Government to stop its attack on people living in public housing - people that Nicola Willis said “won the lottery” by having a state house.

The Government has announced that they will:

  • Increase public housing rents by 20%.
  • Reduce access to public housing, even if you can’t afford a private rental. 
  • Limit the amount of time people can spend in public housing, forcing people out of their secure and affordable homes and into the wild-west private rental market.
  • Reduce the amount people can get from the Temporary Additional Support payment, which can help people cover basic essentials like food, life saving medical treatment, and prevent people from becoming homeless.

The Government is taking money off people in public housing to increase the accommodation supplement for people in the private housing market. This is shuffling money between people who are doing it tough, while they refuse to properly tax landlords or the super rich.

The Green Party in Government will:

  • Build enough quality, affordable, accessible public housing to clear the public housing waitlist.
  • Cap rent increases at 2% per year. 
  • Extend the Income Related Rent Subsidy to those in council housing and reverse these changes to public housing rents. 
  • Remove benefit sanctions, lift incomes, and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Public housing is essential because it makes all housing more affordable. Particularly for its tenants, it provides a safety net for people who experience hard times, and it provides security so that families’ children can stay in the same schools and those on fixed incomes won’t be unexpectedly hit with major rent increases.
