Guns in our community are becoming a bigger problem. We should put good rules in place before it gets out of hand.
In 2017, the Law and Order Select Committee published a report on illegal firearms in New Zealand and made 20 recommendations to improve gun licencing and strengthen the police’s effectiveness in upholding current law. The government of the day (Paula Bennett) rejected 12 of the recommendations, accepted seven, and amended one. It also suggested two additions softening the report’s stance, an alternative step before cancelling an owner licence and a duty to consult with the firearms community. National also had plans to bring in Firearms Prohibition Orders (FPOs).
